This stunning light fixture was made entirely in our studio. The bronze 'diamond frame' is textured metalwork in the 'Giacommeti' style, above the light, six custom fabricated brass diamond lightheads illuminate the Blown glass 'Rain' below. The Glass is a mixture of blown glass orbs, coated in five different gold leaf applications. Yellow, red, white, platinum and lemon gold. We also use crystal 'frit' in different applications on the surface of the blown glass orbs. The fine strands are hung with handmade beads, also spun with gold leaf and crystal frit, and opalescent flat beads, to emulate the rain. This piece can be made in varying lengths, and shapes. These sculptures on the right are works completed in the last year, the bottom photo, shown as a work in progress has been completed, and full photo's of the incredible result will be published on this site very soon.
The work was designed by Mariann Megna, titled "Organic Monument" inspired by the Washington Monument a place often visited by Mariann in her teens and early twenties. 'The structure always seemed so cold But it struck me that it was built during the Civil war...you can see the different Granite used to finish it when they couldn't mine from the South anymore.' 'I love the architecture in Washington, and wanted to infuse the Monument with the warmth of the people whom it represents. The glass 'cells' in their richs varying tones are the poeple.' Martin Megna and skilled Artisan Andy Toro welded the beautiful framework, and together Martin and Mariann blew the glass orbs. The Glass is held in place with bronze wire. The Organic Monument is owned by a private client. dimensions approx 15 inches high. The piece was the inspiration for a much larger piece almost 12 FEET high, also commissioned by a private client. This time the frame was adapted to the clients request, and the Martin chose a riot of color in the glass, which is full to the top in the finished piece. More photo's to follow. This hanging sculpture is made up of blown glass peices in shades of cobalt and medium blue. About 4 ft long!
Martin Megna uses his engineering and welding skills with his talented team to completely fabricate each sculpture and chandelier at his Studio in Sag Harbor. No out-sourcing here, projects come in on time. The sculpture to the left "Blue Sealife" can be varied with colors, and the addition of three, five or seven cone shaped light heads, making it a hanging chandelier. Beautiful in White/clear and gold leaf, one just completed here at Megna Glass.
